Alabama’s Natalia Maynetto was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for women’s tennis, the league announced Wednesday.
“Natalia is very deserving of this recognition,” head coach Jenny Mainz said. “This is a tough honor to be awarded due to the competitiveness of our league.”
The Naples, Fla., native won three matches last weekend, one in doubles and two in singles, including the clincher to give Alabama a 4-3 win over No. 19 Vanderbilt on Sunday. Maynetto fought off three match points to even the third set at 5-5 against the Commodores’ Frances Altick. The Tide freshman has now won seven consecutive singles matches, remaining undefeated in SEC play.
“Natalia has been clutch and has demonstrated poise and composure in the most stressful and pressure situations repeatedly,” added Mainz. “Her fighting spirit and tenacity are infectious and have inspired our team. She has earned the reputation of being absolutely unwilling to yield. This is especially true at her respective position. The No. 6 singles spot is a work position and often times the points are longer and more demanding. Credit goes to Natalia for continuing to compete with a fervent spirit.”
