The third-ranked Alabama men’s golf team shot 10-under 278 in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 18 at the 6,902-yard, par-72 River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club and are tied for first after 36 holes.

The Crimson Tide is tied with Oklahoma at 19-under-par 557 with the final 18 holes slated for Tuesday morning. SMU is in third place at 11-under-par 565 while Georgia (-6, 570) moved into the top five at No. 4 with an 8-under-par 280 on Monday. Georgia Tech rounds out the top five at 5-under-par 571.

Senior Scott Strohmeyer followed up his 69 in round one with another 69 on Monday and is one shot off the tournament lead in third place at 6-under 138. Oklahoma’s Eduardo Castiello and Virginia Tech’s Mikey Moyers are tied for first at 7-under 137.

Strohmeyer, a native of Auburn, Ala., has played brilliant golf over the first 36 holes with eight birdies and just two bogeys. He carded four birdies and one bogey in round two. Justin Thomas equaled Strohmeyer’s lowest round on Monday with a 3-under 69. He moved up 10 positions on the leaderboard into a tie for 17th place at 2-under-par 142.

Junior Cory Whitsett and Bobby Wyatt also secured spots in the top 10 headed into Tuesday’s final round. Whitsett, of Houston, Texas, carded back-to-back rounds of 70 for a 4-under-par 140 and is tied for sixth place. Wyatt, from Mobile, Ala., also shot 70 in the second round and is tied for ninth place at 3-under-par 141.

Tom Lovelady, who paced the Crimson Tide in round one with a 69, shot 76 on Monday and did not count toward Alabama’s team score. He is tied for 28th at 1-over-par 145.

Alabama will be paired with Oklahoma and SMU in Tuesday’s final round, which is scheduled to tee off at 5:30 a.m. (CST) at the River Course at the Rio Mary Country Club.
