The victim in the Sept. 29 shooting at the UA Arboretum has been identified as 39-year-old Dwight Contrell Tanker. 41-year-old Jone Vshal Bates, the alleged shooter, is now being charged with murder after her previous charge of attempted murder was upgraded following Tanker’s death.
According to Captain Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Tanker “succumbed to his injuries” over the weekend.
The Tuscaloosa Police Department and the University of Alabama Police Department were dispatched to 4801 Arboretum Way at approximately 1 p.m. on Sept. 29 before the Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation, Kennedy said.
Officers found Tanker shot and facing life threatening injuries, and he was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center. VCU identified the suspect as Bates, who they determined shot Tanker in a domestic argument before fleeing the scene. Bates was located later in the day before she was committed to Tuscaloosa County Jail with no bond, initially facing attempted murder charges at the time.
“A new arrest warrant was obtained and Bates, who had been in continuous custody in jail charged with Attempted Murder, was immediately rebooked in the jail charged with Murder with no bond,” Kennedy said.
