In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, both the University of Alabama and the city of Tuscaloosa are holding a series of events, showcasing American history through live music, fireworks, virtual classes and more.
“This moment is an opportunity to honor our history, including our many students, alumni, and supporters who have served our great nation,” said UA President Peter Mohler.
Throughout the summer, the University is showcasing the “Made in America” exhibit at the Gorgas House Museum, showcasing items across Alabama’s history from “our 1778 grandfather clock to the student magazines of the 2020s.” Both UA student magazines active in the 2020s were suspended in December.
Through July, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University will host a series of virtual classes based on Revolutionary War-era history. It will also host weekly, in-person classes about American music, titled TUS-160: Songs of Americana, beginning July 7. OLLI is also listed as a partner on the America 250 Alabama website.
The University has already hosted several events under the America 250 banner, including “A Memorial Day Weekend Concert with Denny Chimes” featuring head of music composition and University Carillonneur Amir Zaheri.
The City of Tuscaloosa is hosting two musical events, a live performance by the 151st Army Band on June 30 and a July 4 fireworks display with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra at the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater.
City of Tuscaloosa Arts and Entertainment director Kay Day said that the events would mark “a milestone that truly honors our nation’s history, resilience, and the ideals we collectively share.”
“Guests can look forward to an evening filled with inspiring music that celebrates the spirit of American independence,” Day said.
While both Tuscaloosa and the University’s anniversary programming use the phrase “America 250,” only the Gorgas House exhibit and OLLI have announced affiliation with America 250, the organization established by Congress’ Semiquincentennial Commission.
The America 250 organization has not been entirely absent from Tuscaloosa, however. The organization sponsored the 2025 Iron Bowl, and its banners adorn light poles downtown.
“America 250 at UA will bring our campus community together for thoughtful dialogue, discovery and engagement, reflecting our role as the flagship university of this state and our commitment to advancing the future Alabama and the nation deserve,” Mohler said.
