The Black Student Union will hold BSU Week from Sunday to Friday.
Sunday will be the start of the festivities with a worship service at Cornerstone Full Gospel Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. There will also be a kickoff party from 6-8 p.m. at Capital Hall.
Monday will be a day of service. Members will volunteer at Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and The House Tuscaloosa from 2-4 p.m.
“I think it’s very important that we as University students give back to our Black community here in Tuscaloosa,” said Eric Buchanan, a sophomore majoring in news media, adding that he thinks the community is often underappreciated. “I think it’s just very important that we show love to the people here in Tuscaloosa.”
On Tuesday, the BSU will host a movie night in the Student Center Theater from 7-9 p.m. All University students are invited to attend.
Wednesday will feature the Mr. and Miss Black Alabama scholarship pageant.
“I am excited for the pageant and paying homage to HBCUs,” said Cierra Gilliam, a senior majoring in news media. “When I talk to people about the Black community at UA, we’re always like, ‘Oh, we’re like, our own mini HBCU’ since we’re such a big school.”
University alum Mario Bailey will speak Thursday at the State of the Black Union, the first one since the BSU office was removed from the Student Center in August.
Friday will conclude BSU Week with a charity basketball game at the University South Recreation Center. There will also be a percentage night at Aijan from 5 p.m. to close.
“Even amidst SB129 and having our spaces torn down, we’re still finding a way to build community and show leadership and have representatives to continue that community building and fellowship,” Gilliam said.
