The Alabama women’s golf team won its first NCAA Championship Friday, holding off Southern California in a battle that went down to the last hole. The Crimson Tide finished with a 6-over-par round of 294 on the par-72, 6,264-yard North Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
The Tide started the day with a two-shot lead over the Trojans, who shot a 5-over 293 on Friday. Senior Brooke Pancake led the way for the Tide with a 2-under-par score of 286, putting her in second place behind individual champion Chirapat Jao-Javanil from Oklahoma, who finished with a six-under-par score of 282.
The Tide earned its victory in its eighth NCAA Championship finals appearance, and seventh under head coach Mic Potter. Alabama’s previous best finish was a third place showing in 2010. Women’s golf is the third Alabama team to win a national championship in the last five months, joining the BCS national champion football team and the NCAA champion gymnastics team.
