Culture Staff Picks: Starting fresh

Culture Desk January 13, 2020
The post-winter break fog can be tough to beat. Between budgeting for new books, cleaning an apartment that’s been empty for nearly a month and relearning how to wake up at 6 a.m., students could easily fall right back into bad habits. But don’t stress – just follow the culture desk’s best tips for a fresh start, and let everything else fall into place.

Campus monuments, memorials tell a one-sided story

Desi Gillespie, Contributing Reporter December 5, 2019
The University of Alabama landscape is dotted with monuments to the Confederacy and important sites of the civil rights movement. These are rarely discussed on campus tours or at other events. Some faculty and students believe that the University should be more open and honest in telling its own history.

University brought cream-of-the-crop to Coleman

Leah Goggins | @leahisonline, Assistant Culture Editor December 5, 2019
It’s one thing to admire the lineup on a poster for Woodstock in 1969 or the first Coachella in 1999 – but what about the lineup organized by University Programs back in the day? With chart data and awards stats, it’s not so hard to imagine what a similar lineup of A-list musicians would look like in 2019.

Meghan Mitchell | @pomegranate_27, Culture Editor December 5, 2019

Students find unconventional ways to make ends meet

Jimmy Conroy | @jimC__, Contributing Writer December 4, 2019
College can be expensive for most students. The cost of books and food alone can add up fast, and that doesn’t even take into account any spending money set aside for more enjoyable activities. Many students turn to typical student jobs to try and stay afloat, such as working as a nanny, office assistant or delivery driver. Other students, however, have to get more creative with the way they make their money.

Dispatches From Abroad: University as a Buddhist Monk

Ben Lasseter, Contributing Writer December 4, 2019
It brings me no shame to admit that I have struggled to get to some morning classes on time and in my best form. However, I would never complain about an 8 a.m. class to a monk in Chiang Mai, Thailand’s Suan Dok Temple. There, a bell rings at 5 a.m. every morning.

UA employees learn the realities of active shootings

Grace Schepis | @GraceSchepisCW, Staff Reporter November 20, 2019
From 1966 to 2016, 930 people have fallen victim to mass shootings. As firearm technology gets more deadly, response times by authorities get quicker, and media sensationalism grows, the training offered to students and employees has adapted to reflect the reality of these horrific events.
