The childhood game of Rock Paper Scissors could potentially win someone a free trip to Acapulco, Mexico for spring break.
For 128 UA students, a chance to compete in the USA Rock Paper Scissors College Championship semifinals is tonight at 7 p.m. in the Birmingham room of the Bryant Conference Center. The UA tournament winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to Acapulco, Mexico March 14-17 to compete in the finals for a chance to win $25,000 in tuition. AMP Energy Drink, a division of PepsiCo, sponsors the championship.
AMP Energy Campus Representative Blake Michael said he and his partner, Mark Mclemore, have been recruiting students on campus by challenging them to a game of Rock Paper Scissors and awarding the winners $5.
“We have successfully signed up some people. However, there are many spots still available,” Michael said.
To pre-register for the event, students must send an email containing their first and last name as well as the date they sent the email to [email protected], then show up at the championship for official registration.
“I’m expecting the event to be a lot of fun, and I’m excited to see who can get lucky enough to win the tournament and make it to Mexico. [Michael and Mclemore] do a great job in spreading the word about their events,” said Brian Czapla, a junior majoring in criminal justice and official referee.
All participants in the event will receive AMP Energy gear. There will also be several other giveaways, including a pair of Skullcandy headphones, a Flip HD camcorder and Starbuck’s gift cards, according to the news release.
One of the contenders, Dakota Nichols, a junior majoring in political science, said she heard about it through a Facebook event invitation.
“I expect it to be a lot of fun and decided to sign up to try to win the free trip to Mexico for spring break,” she said.
This is the second annual USA Rock Paper Scissors League Championship. Last year’s winner Jonathan “Naco” Monaco, a student at Syracuse University, won $20,000 for college tuition.
Commissioner Matti Leshem formed the USA Rock Paper Scissors League in 2005. The league was created to bring structure to the sport of Rock Paper Scissors, said Michael in a statement. USARPS has thousands of members and affiliates around the country.
