“A woman opened fire in a biology faculty meeting at the University of Alabama Huntsville on Friday,” the Associated Press reported Friday afternoon. The shooter, still officially unidentified, killed three faculty members and injured two more as well as a staff member. No students were shot.

The shooter was in custody, according the AP.

Burr Ingram, Huntsville Hospital’s spokesman on the matter, told the Associated Press that “two of the injured were in critical condition,” and that “the third was in stable condition.”

The incident occurred in UAHuntsville’s Shelby Center, which houses science department operations. Campus Police cleared students out of the building immediately following the shooting.

“I was actually in the building next door, in the middle of a physics exam,” says Cameron Mortazavi, a freshman majoring in electrical engineering. “It happened towards the end of the exam, and my phone got about 30 or so text messages and calls.”

Mortazavi says that the University’s response was appropriate, but could have been better. “People got the [text] message from the University kind of late, at like 4:30-4:40, when the shooting happened at 3:55,” he says. He was also “appalled” that his professor and proctors did not stop the exam to explain what happened.

“Everybody knew something was going on, with everybody’s phone going off like that,” he says. He also described how UAH’s website immediately went down, speculating that high traffic swamped the site.

Governor Bob Riley issued a statement in response to the shooting around 5:45. “This is a horrible tragedy,” the statement reads. “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.  I want to commend the Huntsville police, the Sheriff’s office and State Troopers for their response.”

“If there is any assistance state agencies can provide to local authorities, it will be provided,” the Governor assured.

The University of Alabama at Huntsville is part of the University of Alabama system, and located in central Huntsville.
