Alabama baseball swept South Alabama in a Saturday double header. The Crimson Tide won the first game 10-5 and 6-1 in game two.

Game One 

The Crimson Tide finished with a season-high 15 hits in the first game of the day. Three different players finished with three hits, led by Tyler Gentry.

The sophomore finished a triple shy of the cycle. Junior Morgan McCullough finished a home run shy of the cycle.

Freshman Connor Shamblin struggled in his third start, as he retired just two Jaguars. He allowed one run off one hit and three walks. Deacon Medders finished with his first win of the season. The junior threw 3 and 2/3 innings and allowed two runs off two hits. He struck out six.

USA scored in the bottom of the first off a sacrifice fly to left field. The Crimson Tide answered in the top of the second when shortstop Kolby Robinson singled to right field with a pair of runners on base. Gentry scored on a error by the right fielder.

The Jaguars answered in the third, when catcher Carter Perkins singled up the middle with a runner on second. From there, Alabama was in control.

Designated hitter Justin King hit his first home run in an Alabama uniform in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, McCullough singled in one of his two RBI, giving Alabama a one run lead. Gentry’s home run in the seventh inning gave Alabama a two-run lead.

Alabama added three runs in the eighth inning before Johnny Hawk hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth.

Game Two 

Alabama scored four of its six runs in the second inning.

Robinson knocked in the first run when he doubled up the middle, scoring King from third. With one out, Gene Wood flied out to center field scoring Drew Williamson. Joe Breaux doubled to left, scoring the third run of the inning. Brett Auerbach singled up the middle for the Crimson Tide’s final run of the inning.

The score remained 4-0 until the top of the seventh. With two outs, King doubled to right field. He was replaced by Walker McCleney, who scored when the Jaguar third baseman had an errant throw trying to get John Trousdale. On a 0-2 count, Williamson singled to center field, scoring Trousdale.

USA scored its only run in the bottom half of the inning when outfielder Michael Sandle flew out to center, scoring the runner from third.

Brock Love finished with the win for Alabama. The redshirt sophomore threw 4 and 2/3 innings and allowed just two runners. He struck out a career-high 11 hitters. Wil Freeman and Jeremy Randolph finished the game. In his 2 1/3 innings, Freeman allowed one run off two hits and struck out two. Randolph threw the last two innings and allowed one hit while striking out four hitters.

“To win a doubleheader, after going to the bullpen in the first inning of the first game, is very impressive,” coach Brad Bohannon said in a press release. “I just can’t say enough positive things about these guys. It’s hard to win on the road and even harder to sweep. Our team really grew this week.”

Alabama’s next game is against UAB on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
