After a two week break due to a cancelled trip to California, Alabama women’s tennis showed no signs of rust as they beat Georgia State 4-3 and UT-Martin 6-0.

“It was a good day,” junior Alba Cortina Pou said. “Everyone took care of business and played their best.”

In the first match of the day, Alabama quickly clinched the victory over Georgia State by winning the doubles point and the first three singles matches. The Panthers then went on to win the final three singles matches with No. 47 senior Andie Daniell suffering her first loss of the season.

“We faced a really tough team in Georgia State,” head coach Jenny Mainz said. “They won their conference last year, they are gritty, and compete hard. We need to be tested like that. I told the team after the first match that it is okay to be uncomfortable and struggle. We just have to keep fighting through it.”

Despite the slow finish to the first match, the Crimson Tide did not let it hinder them against UT-Martin. In the doubles point, Alabama went up multiple breaks on all three courts. UT-Martin fought back, but to no prevail as the point went to Alabama.

In the singles matches, they continued their domination with Daniell avenging her loss from the first match and junior Ann Selim playing up a court at the No. 4 position and winning handily 6-0, 6-2.

“I was focusing on things that I was working on in practice,” Selim said. “I tried to focus on each point, not the score and also how to get better.”

“We’ve been doing a lot of individual work and that has paid dividends,” Mainz said. “A lot of their confidence in built in their individual work. We are making positive headway and we need to keep grinding.”

Alabama will be back in action against Kennesaw State and Lipscomb on Sunday at 10 A.M. and 4 P.M. in the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
