I suppose it was only a matter of time before I got a little Gaga with the fashion column. But this isn’t going to be a piece about how amazing she is, or how much I love what she wears, or how she is a revolutionary. I do like her, but especially after watching the Grammys on Sunday night, I have to wonder: are people getting bored with Lady Gaga?
She’s certainly been a fashion icon over the last few years. Her outrageous style has caused a huge shift toward being more outgoing and glam with fashion. Shoulder pads have made a bit of a comeback. Chains and studs are definitely in right now, and Gaga has been known to rock all of these looks.
But am I alone when I think she might just be losing her shock factor? I’ve heard and read very skeptical and nonplussed reviews of her Grammy performance. She arrived on the red carpet via an egg-shaped “vessel,” which was carried by a litter of gold-clad servants. She “hatched” during her performance, dressed in yellow with a very round yellow hat, which, to me, made her look like a yolk. It worked with the message of her new single “Born This Way,” which she sang after the hatching. After reading that she was in that thing for 72 hours, I’m surprised she was even able to stand up afterward. But it was all part of the “creative experience,” she said.
Even the single has been getting vacant reviews, though. More than one person has expressed to me that it sounds exactly like Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” and that Gaga might be losing her touch. I suppose that remains to be seen with the release of her upcoming album in May.
But this is a fashion column, so I’ll get back to the fashion and leave the music to someone else.
Lady Gaga has become a household name, if only for her bizarre looks and antics. She describes herself as a living work of art. Everything she does is for her audience, on the stage and off.
Even her style seems to be suffering lately, though, in my opinion. Too many nude tones and long, pinkish-blonde hair is just making her look blah. I’d welcome a return to something interesting, because that’s what we all love about her, right? As long as it’s not the meat dress, because that just made me sick. My mom even asked me if I thought they took it home and cooked it for dinner.
Gaga is not afraid to put herself out there, whether she’s decked out in meat, bubbles, feathers, plush Kermit the frog dolls or not much more than underwear. Her message is all about being yourself and not letting others’ opinions influence you, which I am all for. There is no denying she’s been an inspiration to designers and fashionistas everywhere. Her presence has been felt on the runways, in stores and most likely on some of our best friends.
My only question is, will it last?
