Alabama volleyball’s Ed Allen has resigned from his head coaching position on Friday. Assistant coach Ryan Freeburg will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

 “I have decided that it is in the best interest of Alabama volleyball for me to step down as head coach,” Allen said in a press release. “Coaching is something that I remain passionate about, however I do feel that this is the correct decision to make at this time. I am certainly proud of the things we were able to accomplish over the years, and I wish the program the best in the future.”

The Crimson Tide went 18-9 this season under Allen. Alabama also received its first top 25 ranking in program history, after starting 9-0, the best start in program history.

In his eight seasons at Alabama, Allen led the team to a 152-101 which include back-to-back trips to the NCAA tournament in 2013 and 2014.

Freeburg’s tenure as the head coach of the Crimson Tide begins on the road against No. 11 Kentucky. Alabama will also make stops in Starkville and Oxford to play Mississippi State and Ole Miss before returning home to play Texas A&M.
