Protesters gathered outside the Tuscaloosa Federal Building and Courthouse tonight in reaction to President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Matthew Whitaker, the acting attorney general, replaces Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein as the supervisor of the Special Counsel Robert Mueller investigation into Russian interference from the 2016 presidential election. Whitaker has criticized the investigation in the past.

The protest in Tuscaloosa began at 5 p.m. The crowd spoke out in support of Mueller’s investigation.

“I think it’s really good to see there’s a wide variety of people here,” said Clay Cohen, a senior majoring in finance and math. “It’s not just people my age, it’s not just one given demographic.”

When Cohen learned about the protest on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, he decided to come out and join the protestors.

When he arrived at the protest, Cohen said he realized he recognized some of the people participating. He stood at the forefront of the group holding an American flag.

“It’s just very nice to see that in less than 48 hours there can be people regardless of where you are who are willing to perform the ultimate American right and that’s your right to peacefully protest at anytime and anyplace for your rights and what you believe in for the betterment of your country,” Cohen said.

The protesters peacefully held signs and echoed chants.

Supporters of the protest driving by would honk their horns. Occasionally, people who opposed the protest would shout as they drove by.

“We’ve had a couple people come up here and drive by and say their opinion, but they’re entitled to do that just as much as we are, too,” Cohen said.
