The University will celebrate National Fossil Day as established by the National Parks Service.

National Fossil Day was celebrated for the first time on Oct. 12, 2010.

WHAT: National Fossil Day

WHO: This event is open to the public and admission is free.

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 5-7 p.m.

WHERE: Smith Hall

WHY:

Experts from the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham area will be at the event to talk about their fossil research.

Allie Sorlie, education outreach coordinator for the Alabama Museum of Natural History, said this event is a great way to get to know more about the history of the state.

“Whether or not you’re from Alabama, Alabama is a unique place for many reasons,” Sorlie said. “One of the things that we are unique and known for is our fossil diversity.”

Sorlie said Alabama has fossils that are dated as far back as 550 million years.

“If you are interested in fossils, if you’re interested in learning about prehistory, this is an incredible state to go to and find out more about it,” Sorlie said.
