OXFORD — Sixty-two points. More than 500 yards of offense. Seven offensive touchdowns: two from each quarterback and three on the ground. However you measure it, Alabama’s offense marched into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and annihilated the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday night en route to a 62-7 win to open its SEC schedule.

After the Rebels scored on the game’s opening play, Alabama tied the game three plays later on a 43-yard Damien Harris run and seized the lead less than four minutes later on a 79-yard Jerry Jeudy catch.

The Crimson Tide topped 50 points by the opening minutes of the second half, becoming the first SEC team to ever score 50 or more points in three straight games to start a season — and all in sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s first career SEC start and first career road start.

“I thought he played really well,” head coach Nick Saban said. “I was really pleased. … I thought he was right on with the ball. He made a lot of really, really good plays.”

Once Alabama had taken control, it added two more touchdowns in the first quarter: a 10-yard diving score from sophomore running back Najee Harris and a 12-yard pass from Tagovailoa to junior tight end Irv Smith Jr.

Junior running back Josh Jacobs found the end zone from four yards out in the second quarter, followed by two precise passes from junior quarterback Jalen Hurts to Jeudy and sophomore wide receiver Henry Ruggs III. Those were the Crimson Tide’s final two offensive touchdowns.

Jeudy’s second score marked the third straight multi-touchdown game for the sophomore receiver, which matches the combined total of former Alabama stars Calvin Ridley and Julio Jones.

“It feels good to be mentioned with them two, two of the great receivers that came through Alabama,” Jeudy said. “I would say more (credit) goes to the offense, Coach Locksley calling good plays to get me the ball, the O-line blocking and letting Tua make good throws.”

Jeudy’s career-high 136 receiving yards led the Crimson Tide. Tagovailoa, Hurts and sophomore quarterback Mac Jones combined for 306 passing yards to eight different receivers.

For the first time since the 2014 Iron Bowl, Alabama has recorded back-to-back games of more than 300 passing yards.

Quarterbacks were 10-of-13 for 219 yards and three touchdowns when targeting one of the team’s top four receivers: Sophomores Jeudy, Ruggs and DeVonta Smith and freshman Jaylen Waddle.

“We really saw that [Ole Miss was] in man-to-man coverage most of the time, so we were trying to win with our receivers,” Jeudy said.

For the third straight game, Alabama ran the ball more than 40 times and amassed more than 200 yards on the ground. Damien Harris, Najee Harris, Jacobs and three other players each had a rush of 10 yards or more.

Tagovailoa even got in on the action, rushing for a career-high 47 yards on five carries.

“At Alabama we pride ourselves on running the football,” Smith Jr. said. “We want to make a statement and let everyone know we’re the most physical team. I feel like we’re getting better in that but there’s still room to improve.”
