The Actor’s Charitable Theatre will be performing “Seussical The Musical,” a combination of Dr. Seuss books and stories interwoven into one play, this weekend at the Bama Theatre. 

The Actor’s Charitable Theatre was founded in 2008 as a nonprofit organization. The nonprofit performs several shows a year while partnering with other charitable organizations for each of these shows. After the play, a portion of the proceeds goes back to the partner organization. For Suessical The Musical, The Actor’s Charitable Theatre is partnering with Success by Six, an organization that seeks to provide services to at-risk children aged newborn to five. 

In this medley of a musical, the audience will see an array of Dr. Seuss characters like Mr. and Mrs. Who, Yertle the turtle, Horton the elephant, the Grinch and many more of the classic characters that Dr. Seuss fans might recognize.

“Suessical The Musical” tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that the Whos live on. The whole play is seen through the eyes of Jojo, a young Who boy who’s sent off to military school for having a big imagination.

The cast for “Suessical The Musical” includes actors who range in age from toddler to adult.

“We’ve been rehearsing since January,” said Alisha Lay, the director of the musical. “The play has a range of ages, talent and experience from actors to music educators, to psychologists, to teachers.”

However, this is not Lay’s first time being a part of “Suessical The Musical.”

“I first worked on Suessical 10 years ago as a choreographer for Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre,” Lay said. “I really identified with the story of an elephant who is so selfless and I’ve always said that if I ever had the opportunity to do the show again that I wanted to direct if from beginning to end. The show is probably 90 percent music, so it really was more of choreographing the entire play.”

Suessical The Musical will take place on March 2-4 at the Bama Theatre starting at 7 p.m.

“Everything in this play is over the top, everything is based in imagination, so if your imagination can take you there we’re going to take you there for the show,” Lay said.
