The Hidden Humanities lecture series continues today, welcoming Author James Marcus. His lecture, “The Secular Swerve: God, The Humanities and Mr. Emerson,” will emphasize the importance of the humanities in education. It will incorporate both his personal experience with higher education and the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The series, hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, aims to confront the dismissal of the humanities in education. 

Marcus’s lecture will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Northwest corner of the main quad, west of Gorgas Library and near the Blount Scholars Program building. This event is free and open to all members of the Tuscaloosa community. 

Marcus is the current editor of Harper’s Magazine and the author of Amazonia: Five Years at the Epicenter of the Dotcom Juggernaut. Marcus’s work has appeared in Harper’s, The Nation, The Atlantic and The New York Times. 

His next book, Glad to the Brink of Fear: A Portrait of Emerson in Thirteen Installments, will be published in 2018.
