A new exhibit of abstract art in Tuscaloosa is influenced by the world of music, calling to minds the sounds and improvisations of a live band.

From Sept. 29 – Nov. 4 the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art in 103 Garland Hall will be hosting an exhibit by the artist Pinkney Herbert, titled: “Distilled – The Narrative Transformed.” The exhibit itself was organized and overseen by the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. “Distilled” traveled to Tuscaloosa from Knoxville upon request.

“The exhibit is not targeted towards a specific audience,” said Vicki Rial, Exhibitions Coordinator for The University of Alabama. “College students should be entertained by the color and exuberant mark-making in Herbert’s art and what it calls to mind.”

The pieces themselves aim to be abstract and open to interpretation. They were created in a way that highlights Herbert’s enthusiastic, gestural mark-making.
