On Saturday, The New York Times released a story detailing the specifics of Republican nominee Donald J. Trump’s 1995 tax return. The information was leaked to The Times by an anonymous source and comes after Trump’s months-long refusal to release the documents voluntarily.
The filing shows that Trump had losses totaling $916 million in 1995. According to the tax analysts hired by The Times, a loss of this size would enable Trump to not pay taxes for up to 18 years.
While Trump declined to comment on the story, his campaign released a statement saying how Trump has no obligation to pay more taxes than he is legally responsible to.
“Mr. Trump knows the tax code far better than anyone who has ever run for president, and he is the only one that knows how to fix it,” stated Trump’s campaign.
Hillary Clinton’s campaign sees the incident differently.
“He apparently got to avoid paying taxes for nearly two decades – while tens of millions of hardworking families paid theirs,” said Robby Mook, the campaign manager for Hillary Clinton. “He calls that ‘smart.’ Now that the gig is up, why doesn’t he go ahead and release his returns to show us all how ‘smart’ he really is?”
