Since 2009, the Best Buddies Friendship Walk has had over 70,000 participants in 46 cities. It is the number one walk in the country to benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Established in 1993, the purpose of The University of Alabama chapter of Best Buddies has been to establish a global volunteer program that matches college students and IDD individuals to create one-on-one friendships and to help develop leadership and integrated employment skills.
This weekend, Best Buddies will be hosting a walk to raise money for their program.
WHO: Anyone who pays the five dollar registration fee. may participate.
WHAT: The walk will raise money for the Best Buddies Program. The University of Alabama chapter is currently trying to raise enough funds to start up a state office so they can provide for the three current chapters located throughout the state of Alabama.
WHEN: It will take place from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 9.
WHERE: Government Plaza, located on the intersection of Sixth Street and 12th Avenue in Tuscaloosa
WHY: “The walk plays a key role in funding Best Buddies programs dedicated to one-to-one friendships, leadership development, and integrated job opportunities for individuals with IDD,” their website stated. “Each walk provides an opportunity to see the Best Buddies mission in action at a local level.”
With a goal of $50,000, they have raised close to $11,000 for this year’s walk.
“I walk for those who may not speak the loudest, but for those who have the biggest hearts,” said Chandler Shields, a senior majoring in public relations.
