The Alabama House Judiciary Committee held its first meeting regarding the impeachment of Alabama Governor Robert Bentley this week. Bentley has been accused of corruption, neglect of duty, incompetency and offenses of moral turpitude following allegations of a sexual affair with his spokesperson turned senior political advisor Rebekah Caldwell Mason. On April 23 members of the House of Representatives filed a five-page resolution citing Bentley’s charges.
If the resolution is approved by the House, it will move to the Senate. The Senate would then hold a trial to deliberate on whether or not Bentley should be removed from office.
In addition, Bentley is currently being sued by former head of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Spencer Collier. Collier said he was unlawfully removed from his post for confronting Bentley about the affair.
When asked about the impeachment efforts, Bentley said he is not worried and remains focused on his job.
