How does knowing how to ride a bike or play an instrument remain constant in your brain, when names and faces have a tendency to escape? Why do humans lose memories at all, and what makes those that stay do so? The Edge of Chaos, a project by the UAB School of Public Health, will host a performance entitled Re:Memory to question, research, and express thoughts on memory. Community outreach, science, and performance art will all be utilized by professionals and amateurs to answer the many questions of memory, such as why we remember and forget certain things.

Discoveries in the Making

WHERE: Homewood Public Library, Round Auditorium

WHEN: April 14, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

WHY: This event, a project hosted by UAB Graduate School, is a presentation by their outreach program dedicated to exposing the community to new research in science and the humanities. At research institutions, progress and new discoveries are constantly being made, and attendees will get the chance to explore research being done at UAB that will enrich their knowledge of the world and maybe affect their future lives.

The Secret Garden

WHERE: Red Mountain Theatre Company’s Cabaret Theatre

WHEN: April 14 – April 24

WHY: Red Mountain Theatre Company, a local non-profit in downtown Birmingham dedicated to promoting musical theatre, will put on the musical The Secret Garden, a story about fairytales come to life, for ten days. Tickets start at 30$.

Lobby Projects: Artist Talk: Bethany Collins

WHERE: Birmingham Museum of Art, 8th Ave Lobby

WHEN: April 16, 6-9 p.m.

WHY: Montgomery native and artist Bethany Collins will present her multi-disciplinary art through a new initiative entitled “Lobby Projects.” Her exhibition, which is entitled The Problem We All Live With, will highlight the combination of race and language.

Darter Festival

WHERE: Good People Brewery

WHEN: April 17, 12-4 p.m.

WHY: The Southern Environmental Center and Railroad Park will host its fourth annual Darter festival, a celebration of Alabama’s diverse darter population featuring Seasonal Darter ale and an interactive Darter sculpture. This event will also host food trucks, live performances, and face painting. 10$ admission includes a free beverage voucher and 50$ VIP tickets includes free drinks and food.

Birmingham Revealed

WHERE: Vulcan Park and Museum

WHEN: April 21, 5-7 p.m.

WHY: Birmingham Revealed is an educational performance series put on by Vulcan Park and Museum. This particular event will showcase A Slippery Slope: The Consequences of Hate, which is a musical production focusing on Holocaust survivors and consisting of poetry and scores performed by The Seasoned Performers.
