The Alabama men’s tennis team played a tight match against the No. 9 ranked Oklahoma State, but ultimately lost, 4-0, Friday afternoon in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.
The doubles point was contested early but went to Oklahoma State. Senior Becker O’Shaughnessey and sophomore Grayson Goldin fell 6-1, but sophomore Matthew Rossouw and freshman Spencer Richey evened things up with a 6-3 win. It all came down to court one’s doubles match. Freshman Mazen Osama and sophomore Korey Lovett held a 5-4 lead, but come the final serve, they lost 7-5, giving Oklahoma State the first point on the board.
On the singles side, Goldin lost 6-1, 6-3 to give Oklahoma State the 2-0 lead. Next, O’Shaughnessey was defeated 6-2, 6-3. In the other matches, Alabama led or was within a break on all four courts. Despite that, Alabama lost after Osama fell 7-5, 6-4.
When play ended, Lovett led his opponent 3-6, 6-1, 4-1, Richey led his counterpart 6-4, 5-3, and Rossouw was on top 6-2, 6-5.
“We were right there,” coach George Husack said. “The momentum was starting to swing our way, but the final score won’t necessarily reflect that. I’m confident we’re on the right path but can’t take anything for granted if we want to be a great team.”
Alabama will play its next match Saturday at 3 p.m., against either Boise State or Princeton.
