Fans of the theater and fashion can find both find plenty to enjoy starting today at the “Life of a Costume: From Page to Stage” exhibit at the UA Gallery in Downtown Tuscaloosa. The event, which bills itself as a glimpse into the process and work behind developing costumes for theatrical production, will have its open reception on Friday, Sept. 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will run Sept. 4th to 25th.
Donna Meester, an associate professor in the University of Alabama’s theater and dance department, created the exhibit. She is an experienced veteran in the world of fashion design. She and her students designed most of the outfits in the exhibit.
“Costume design actually entails quite a lot,” Meester said. “The first part is making a design and the second part is making it a finished product.”
Meester said the exhibit will have 15 costumes and accessories such as chain mail armor that were made at UA. Selected student designs will also be featured in the exhibit.
For attendees hoping for a more in-depth learning experience about the history of costumes, there will also be large “storyboards” that explain the progression of costume design.
