As the summer draws to a close, the film year enters into the early stages of prestige season, where many of the year’s awards contenders begin to ever so slowly trickle into theaters everywhere. In the case of many, they launch at a major film festival, in places such as New York, Venice, Telluride or Toronto. While many lineups have yet to be fully announced, the Toronto International Film Festival — which runs from Sept. 10 through Sept. 20 — announced its first wave of screenings on July 28. Packed with films from all over the world and bound to draw an insane amount of star power, this year’s festival lineup is incredibly diverse, bringing in a spectrum of films, with romantic dramas at one end and nail-biting thrillers at the other. However, while some of the higher-profile films, such as Johnny Depp’s gangster drama “Black Mass” and Matt Damon’s space thriller “The Martian,” will no doubt take up the majority of the spotlight, several smaller-profile films debuting at Toronto offer different options to look forward to later in 2015.
