SPORTS | Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban was honored with a ceremony Saturday to commemorate the renaming of the Crimson Tide’s home football field to Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The festivities began in front of the stadium, where friends and family of Saban, members of the University of Alabama Board of Trustees, and thousands of fans gathered to celebrate the Crimson Tide legend.

Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne kicked things off by detailing how the Sabans impacted the program and thanking them for all their contributions to the greater Tuscaloosa community.

“We are forever grateful for all they’ve done and all they will continue to do in Tuscaloosa and beyond. Today is a celebration of you, Coach Saban and Mrs. Terry,” Byrne said.

“It’s about having the 1-0 mentality throughout the whole game, and having an optimistic mindset,” quarterback Jalen Milroe said about getting into a rhythm in the fourth quarter.

CULTURE | Country singer Tucker Wetmore made an ex

CULTURE | Country singer Tucker Wetmore made an exciting appearance in Tuscaloosa Aug. 29 at Druid City Music Hall as part of the Kaleidoscope concert series. The venue was full of fans singing and dancing along, buying merchandise, and squeezing in to get the best view of Wetmore’s performance.

The emerging country artist from Kamala, Washington, moved to Nashville to chase his musical dreams. After signing with Universal Music Group Nashville, he quickly achieved success writing or featuring in two songs, “Already Had It” and “Steal My Thunder,” which were featured in the tornado-chasing film “Twisters” this summer.

After swiftly gaining popularity and a devoted fan base on social media, Wetmore launched his career in February with his debut release, “Wine Into Whiskey.” Since embarking on his musical journey, Wetmore has gained over 7 million monthly Spotify listeners, and he will headline his first major tour, “Waves On A Sunset,” beginning Oct 4.

NEWS | Speed and efficiency were what students wer

NEWS | Speed and efficiency were what students were promised with the new kiosk system at the Chick-fil-A in Lloyd Hall, which replaced the grab-and-go setup and expanded the menu. But instead of streamlined service, many feel stuck in longer lines, questioning whether the changes have done more harm than good, and some are petitioning the University to revert the change.

Previously, students could pick up food directly and pay for it at a separate register.

The new system mimics the style of the Student Center location, requiring students to order at self-serve kiosks and wait for their order to be completed. According to a UA news release, the change was an “[improvement] designed to be more efficient in meeting the needs of all diners.”

But many students disagree. In an informal survey of 20 students conducted by The Crimson White, all 20 found the kiosk system inefficient, with all preferring the previous grab-and-go method, citing quicker service and greater convenience.

NEWS | A new exhibit in the Saban Center will visu

NEWS | A new exhibit in the Saban Center will visually teach children how the planet’s environmental and earth systems work.

The exhibit, called “Science on a Sphere,” will be a projected hologram of Earth onto a sphere 6 feet in diameter with an interactive kiosk that holds over 600 databases showing weather patterns, water currents and a variety of other related topics about the planet.

When a database is selected, the data is projected onto the sphere to allow students to visualize different Earth phenomena with real-time imaging.

“Science on a Sphere is an incredible exhibit,” said Brandt LaPish, the director of development for the Saban Center. “It really shows how the Earth systems move throughout the globe. We are so excited about this exhibit. We’re happy, and we feel like it’s going to be very important.”

NEWS | The Queer Student Association hosted its annual Shantay, UA! event at the Student Center Friday — the organization’s first time holding the event since a law targeting diversity, equity and inclusion programs in public schools was enacted earlier this year in Alabama. Shantay, UA! aims to assure freshmen and all LGBTQ+ students that they have a support system as they enter or continue college.

Much of the event was hosted by local drag queens Ophelia Foxx and Jayda Sinn. Ophelia Foxx is a UA alum, and Jayda Sinn is from Hillcrest, Alabama, both of whom performed at the event. Campus dance groups also performed, including HallyUA, a dance and social group centered around K-pop, and The Crimson Belles, an “auxiliary-style” dance team. There was also a comedy routine from campus improvisational group, Just Role With It.

In March, Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law Senate Bill 129, which prohibits public institutions of higher education from sponsoring or funding DEI programs or offices as they are defined in the law.

SPORTS | Alabama football started its season with a 63-0 win in Bryant-Denny Stadium, taking down the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers for a 1-0 start for the Kalen DeBoer era.

“I told you guys upstairs, every win is something that they've [the team has] worked hard for, and make sure we enjoy it and go back to work,” DeBoer, Alabama’s new head coach, said.

The Crimson Tide came out strong in the first quarter. An interception from defensive back Keon Sabb brought the ball to WKU's 16, and quarterback Jalen Milroe secured a 12-yard rushing touchdown at the 10-minute mark.

Sabb intercepted WKU quarterback TJ Finley’s pass again and returned it 63 yards to the Hilltoppers’ 26. A 22-yard pass by Milroe to Kendrick Law, followed by an extra point, brought home another seven points for the Crimson Tide.
