SPORTS | After Alabama football finished its regular season with a 28-14 win over Auburn to move to 9-3, the team has left its fate in the hands of the College Football Playoff committee.

The committee responded to the Crimson Tide’s win by putting Alabama at No. 11 in its most recent rankings, which as of now would send the team on a trip to play Notre Dame in the first round of the playoffs. However, the Crimson Tide isn’t out of the woods yet. Due to the automatic bids for the five highest-ranked conference champions, the team could find itself out of the playoff if No. 18 Clemson can beat No. 8 SMU in the ACC championship.

Alabama will almost certainly be in the playoff if SMU wins over Clemson. But if Clemson wins, a debate will be had on if the Crimson Tide will secure the final playoff spot over SMU. There also is a potential scenario of No. 12 Miami or No. 14 South Carolina potentially jumping in the rankings on Selection Sunday.

NEWS | On Tuesday, over a dozen members of the gro

NEWS | On Tuesday, over a dozen members of the group Bama Students for Palestine and Leftist Collective at UA participated in a “die-in” protest on the Quad, the latest in a series of pro-Palestine, anti-war demonstrations on campus.

Protestors lay on their backs to symbolize people killed during the war between Israel and surrounding militant groups in the Middle East, holding up signs with messages such as “UA investments kill kids” and “Tide against genocide.”

“It’s really just trying to bring attention to the amount of casualties in Gaza, in Palestine and in Lebanon in this occupation,” Isabella Cornelius, senior news media major and media liaison for the protestors, told The Crimson White before the protest began. “We will be laying on the ground to represent the 45,000-plus who have been killed in this conflict.”

The die-in is the latest in a series of pro-Palestine events, including a Palestinian speaker living in the West Bank on Nov. 20, a silent protest at the UA System Board of Trustees meeting on Nov. 8, and a demonstration on the Quad on Sept. 24.

SPORTS | Alabama men’s basketball announced a significant loss on Tuesday, as fifth-year guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. is out for the season after suffering an injury Saturday during the final game of the Players Era Festival tournament.

“We did get an MRI on Latrell,” head coach Nate Oats said in a press conference Tuesday. “He did rupture his achilles tendon, and he’s out for the year, which is disappointing.”

Wrightsell was helped from the court after suffering a non-contact injury while chasing an offensive rebound with 18:51 left in the second half.

“He’s going to have surgery on Wednesday. We expect a full recovery,” Oats said. “He’ll get back to a high level of basketball after his recovery.”

NEWS | At 2 p.m. on Nov. 13, a sit-in protest in s

NEWS | At 2 p.m. on Nov. 13, a sit-in protest in support of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives was scheduled to occur on the Quad. Instead, the UA School of Social Work asked a professor involved in the protest’s planning to cancel it just hours before it was set to begin, threatening the professor with termination.

Sierra Blair and Bailey Megowen are juniors studying social work who helped organize the protest and came together to regroup after it was canceled and then uncancelled on the day of.

“This event was supposed to be a way for students to show their support of DEI initiatives on campus, because after SB129 took away a lot of services, students feel unheard,” Megowen said, referencing Senate Bill 129, an Alabama law that went into effect Oct. 1, prevents public schools from funding DEI programs. Since its introduction the bill has been heavily debated on college campuses all across the state.

“The biggest thing we did was embrace what this game means,” quarterback Jalen Milroe said. “It was important to get this win with so many things that are going on with our football team. I thought it was a good opportunity for us to go out there and compete.”

OPINION | For years, the classic theme was banned

OPINION | For years, the classic theme was banned at home games due to students’ use of profanity in between lines of the song, but the song returned in 2018, with the University asking students to stop the swearing.

Contributing Columnist Kathryn Briggs argues the song has only exploded with expletives since, worsening the image of the University and making home games uncomfortable for families with small children.

"Some students may claim, as an excuse, that the football players and athletic staff are the only ones required to represent themselves professionally. Yes, these people are the only ones mandated to be professional, but we as students represent The University of Alabama wherever we go — even more so when thousands of us join together to shout profanities at other teams," Briggs said.

NEWS | Weeks after Black students nationwide recei

NEWS | Weeks after Black students nationwide received anonymous racist texts, faculty members say that the University’s response is being limited by Senate Bill 129, as some call for a public statement.

SB129, a law that restricts university funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs and restricts discussion of “divisive topics” on college campuses, went into effect Oct. 1, just a month before students reported receiving the texts on Nov. 6.

Since the texts were sent, the University has gone without a public statement addressing the text messages beyond statements sent directly to the news media, not sending an institution-wide email or posting a statement online or on social media. This comes even as Black UA students who received the texts have recounted other experiences of racism at the University.

The University has on multiple occasions not said its rationale for not sending a public statement to students, despite being asked by The Crimson White. Faculty members suggested that the reason could be a “chilling effect” created by SB129, prompting fear among University officials about explicitly condemning hate on campus.

“Pre-Oct. 1, we could make a statement. We could also create programming to educate people not to reproduce these kinds of actions,” said Nirmala Erevelles, program chair and professor of social and cultural studies in education in the College of Education. “Now we can't, or we are interpreting it as if we can't.”

CULTURE | Seniors majoring in apparel and textiles

CULTURE | Seniors majoring in apparel and textiles showcased their designs Sunday night at the Bama Theatre during the Fashion for Life fall fashion show.

The show featured 18 designers, which was twice the number from last year’s show. It was a loud, bold and memorable moment for many of the fashion students.

“This is something that’s been on all of our minds for a year now,” said Lainey Weirich, a senior majoring in apparel and textiles who was one of the designers. “It’s exhilarating to be here, and it’s been a long time coming.”

The students were told to start envisioning what they wanted to create last semester and started working on their collection in August. They had three months to prepare for the show, and Weirich said they traditionally work on one outfit per month, though are not limited to only three pieces.

NEWS | Will Witt’s “Do Not Comply” tour, hos

NEWS | Will Witt’s “Do Not Comply” tour, hosted by Turning Point USA Alabama Tuesday, sparked conversations about personal freedoms and government overreach at the University of Alabama.

The event in Gallalee Hall focused on topics such as free speech, individual liberties and personal responsibility.

Witt, a conservative commentator and author, shared his perspective on what he views as a decline in America’s cultural and social values. His “Do Not Comply” tour promotes his 2023 book of the same name, which outlines why and how the working class should take power back from the “corrupt elite.” The book promotion tour, which launched in September 2023, has visited many universities and high schools across the country.

“We’re living in a society where people lack a sense of meaning,” Witt said. “It’s sad to see so many Americans who no longer feel like they’re part of the country they once knew. It does start in the classroom and what we focus on teaching.”

CULTURE | The Kaleidoscope concert series continued at Druid City Music Hall as Evan Honer took the stage Thursday with special guests Eli Winders and Liam St. John for a night filled with American folk and blues-inspired music.

Honer, most known for his cover of Tyler Childers’ deep cut “Jersey Giant,” started his career in southern California as he built a social media following by blending genres such as acoustic folk, indie Americana and alternative pop.

“Jersey Giant is my favorite song,” said Sienna Kasper, a freshman in the crowd. “That’s the song I’m most excited to hear.”
