‘How I Met Your Mother’ TV finale lives up to audience hype

Well, the “How I Met Your Mother” series finale was everything I thought it would be and more. In one word it was legen-, wait for it, dary! After nine seasons, all loose ends were finally tied up. Warning: If you have not seen the finale yet, this article contains major spoilers.

Ted Evelyn Mosby met Tracy, his future wife and the show’s titular Mother, on a train platform, just as he was leaving for Chicago. As fate would have it, Ted did not end up going to Chicago and stayed in New York. Barney and Robin’s three-year marriage ended in divorce, and Marshall finally became a judge. The episode progresses throughout the years and shows how the group drifts apart as the years go by.

One thing remains, however – they decide they will always be there for the big moments. Robin may not be able to make it to all of them, but in the end she makes it to Ted and Tracy’s wedding.

Just when you didn’t think Barney Stinson could ever love another woman besides Robin, he does. In Barney’s attempt at the perfect month, he ends up getting number 31 pregnant. In a scene that brought me to tears, Barney holds his daughter for the very first time and says how he is absolutely in love with her. Out of all the things I’ve witnessed on “HIMYM” Neil Patrick Harris crying has to be the most beautiful.

While the show is usually averaging around 9 million viewers per episode, on Monday night they went out on top with 12.9 million viewers tuning in. As fans had predicted, one of the biggest surprises was that the reason Ted is telling his children the story is because the mother is dead. What the kids point out in the end is that Ted isn’t telling them about their mother because he wants them to know how he met her. Ted is telling them this story because he is in fact in love with Robin and he wants to know if it’s okay with them if they start dating.

In the very last moments of the finale, Ted decides not to call Robin because he knows exactly what to do. In true “HIMYM” form, he goes to Robin’s apartment and stands outside waiting for her to open her window. Just like he did in the pilot episode so many years ago, he holds out the blue French horn to Robin while she looks down at him with her dogs beside her. As sad as I am that the mother died, I can’t think of a better way to end the series than with Ted and Robin.

“HIMYM” has become a cult favorite to fans, and although the series has dragged on for nine seasons, there’s a reason fans keep coming back. No matter how bad the ups and downs are, these friends truly know how to stick it out. They are not your typical overly dramatic relationships; they are people we all know. We’ve all been scared to commit like Robin, or hope to find the one like Ted. There will always be a Lily and Marshall couple no matter where you go, and for every Lily and Marshall there is bound to be a Barney Stinson.

“HIMYM” touched so many of us because in a way, those six are us. I believe all of us are looking for the one with the yellow umbrella or blue French horn or which ever inanimate object your true love may be holding.
