The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees elected Angus R. Cooper III as a new member Feb. 7. Cooper will represent Alabama’s first congressional district for the board along with current board member Harris Morrissette.
Cooper is the president of The Cooper Group, a stevedoring and maritime firm founded by his grandfather in 1905. He has served in the role since 2008.
Karen Brooks, chair of the board’s nominating committee, said Cooper is “widely regarded as one of Alabama’s most respected business leaders” and is committed to community advancement and public service.
“With his extensive leadership experience, strong business expertise and unwavering commitment to strengthening Alabama, we are confident he will be an exceptional addition to the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees,” she said.
Cooper received his bachelor’s degree in general business from the University in 1997. He is currently a cabinet member of The Rising Tide 2.0 Capital Campaign, an initiative attempting to raise $1.8 billion for University scholarships, facilities and faculty and program support.
“His deep knowledge of the state’s workforce needs will help us continue to offer innovative, in-demand degrees to our students, and his ability to unite people around a common goal and drive strategic growth will be invaluable as we ensure the continued success of the University of Alabama System and its far-reaching impact across the state,” said Scott Phelps, Board of Trustees president pro tempore.
Cooper’s election will be submitted to the state Senate for confirmation.
