Maria Derisavi, formerly one of the top five Homecoming Queen candidates, withdrew from the race less than three days after the candidates were announced.
Derisavi is a senior from Great Mills, Maryland, majoring in international studies.
“Due to extenuating circumstances, I have had to withdraw from the homecoming court. The chance to represent UA through this role is one I hold in high regard –– I maintain deep gratitude to have had the opportunity to be a part of the court and intend to continue to impact the organizations I care about beyond homecoming week,” Derisavi said in an email.
Derisavi declined to say the specific reason for withdrawing, saying it was personal. She also did not answer questions about when she made her decision to withdraw.
The Homecoming Committee did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.
“I wish the four other incredible candidates the best in their upcoming campaigns,” Derisavi said.
