NEWS | Earlier this month, the University granted

NEWS | Earlier this month, the University granted the UA chapter of Young Americans for Freedom permission to omit the terms “gender identity,” “gender expression” and “sexual identity” from its constitution’s non-discrimination clause. Multiple student organizations have since voiced their disapproval of the exemption.

After UA YAF applied to renew its organization with The Source, an annual requirement for student organizations, The Source rejected the application. A University employee stated in an email reply to UA YAF that it was required to include a non-discrimination clause in its constitution with the “EXACT” wording, noting that UA YAF would remain in “frozen status” until it complied.

However, after filing a complaint to the University — and including Steve Marshall, Alabama’s attorney general, on the email chain for “extra pressure” — the organization was granted the exemption.

As of publication, the executive boards of Not On My Campus, UA Planned Parenthood Generation Action and the Queer Student Association have voiced their disapproval of the University granting UA YAF the exemption via their respective Instagram accounts.

“If hate truly does not roll here, we implore the University to reassess their exception, and stand on the side of progress, not in the face of it” said the QSA executive board’s statement. “We also want to remind students that your voice matters, regardless of the forces trying to silence it.”

NEWS | The University of Alabama was mistakenly listed as under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for awarding “impermissible race-based scholarships and race-based segregation.” The University of Alabama System school actually under investigation is the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The initial press release from the DOE Office of Civil Rights announcing the investigation was updated without announcement Monday. It now lists UAB instead of The University of Alabama as one of the seven institutions under investigation.

Alex House, associate director of media relations for the University, said that the University had “not been contacted by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights about the investigation announced Friday and is no longer listed in the press release.”

BREAKING NEWS | Former Tuscaloosa police officer,

BREAKING NEWS | Former Tuscaloosa police officer, Corey Nicholas Burcham, was arrested Monday and charged with 10 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material.

The West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force obtained information Wednesday and conducted an investigation which uncovered multiple images depicting child sexual abuse material on a phone belonging to Burcham.

Burcham was taken into custody by TPD Chief Brent Blankley and other officers on Monday afternoon.

SPORTS | No. 7 Alabama men’s basketball topped N

SPORTS | No. 7 Alabama men’s basketball topped No. 1 Auburn on the road in buzzer-beating fashion 93-91, ending the regular season with a win over its in-state rival.

“This is a big win for us. This is a big win for all Alabama fans,” forward Grant Nelson said.

The Crimson Tide took a 10-4 lead in the first four minutes, a quick start that the team did not get in its last meeting with the Tigers.

Then, after a few minutes of the teams trading buckets, Nelson took over.

With Alabama maintaining a 25-21 lead and 8:42 left in the half, Nelson threw down a dunk, drawing a foul. He then hit the “Crimson Crane” celebration, causing boos to rain down upon him and his teammates.

He scored 9 of his team’s following 12 points, giving the Crimson Tide a 37-29 lead with 5:36 remaining in the half.

“My teammates, they’ve been giving me confidence,” Nelson said.

CULTURE | The Emerging Choreographers Showcase hel

CULTURE | The Emerging Choreographers Showcase held its final performance on Saturday in the English Building theater. Throughout the week, dances packed with powerful messages were delivered with grace, energy and technique.

The first dance — “The Chorus of Change,” choreographed by Avril Sharp — shared a journey from silence to strength as the dancers crafted formations of unity on stage.

“We Shall Have Spring Again,” choreographed by Cathryn Jacks, was a beautiful piece of transformation — from winter to spring and grief to renewal. This ballet contemporary dance exhibited elegance and poise as the dancers traveled through different emotions. McKenna Booker, who seemed to be the lead during parts of the dance, especially conveyed expressions of resilience and joy.

The energy picked up in the third dance of the night with Trinity Williams’ piece “Vanishing Act,” which was a duet between Alyssa Potter and Macy Wright. The dance was a story of two characters: the fantasy, who embodies perfection, and the real person, who is obsessed with the fantasy.

NEWS | The University provided the UA Young Americans for Freedom chapter an exception to a required non-discrimination clause for student organization constitutions that prohibits barring membership based on characteristics of personal identity.

The exception for the conservative political organization allows it to use a modified version of the required non-discrimination statement excluding wording prohibiting discrimination based on a student’s “gender identity, gender expression, [or] sexual identity.”

“We were not about to be bullied by this new gender ideology cult infecting the University of Alabama administration,” Trenton Buffenbarger, president of UA YAF, said in an article on the YAF website.

After UA YAF applied to renew its organization with The Source, an annual requirement for student organizations, the Source rejected the application. A University employee stated in an email reply to UA YAF that it was required to include a nondiscrimination clause in its constitution with the “EXACT” wording, noting that UA YAF would remain in “frozen status” until it complied.

The chapter pushed back against this required clause, as it included references to gender identity and sexual identity.

Buffenbarger said in an interview with The Crimson White that he saw this as an attack on “basic free-thinking students,” adding he believes that welcoming in someone who not only fundamentally disagrees with the organization on “ideology,” but encourages the opposing ideology, is wrong.

“UA tried to force us to not only comply, but to explicitly put something we disagree with in writing in our constitution,” Buffenbarger said. “It is a violation of the First Amendment.”

NEWS | The Office of Student Life announced an ano

NEWS | The Office of Student Life announced an anonymous text-based reporting system for hazing and other misconduct Tuesday. Through the vendor, RealResponse, students can text UAct at 888-708-8433 to report acts of misconduct.

RealResponse was originally created for anonymous two-way communication for athletes and coaches, but it has slowly adapted to serve other purposes like anonymous reporting on college campuses.

The new service comes to the University after two different instances of hazing occurred that ended in the arrest of a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon last spring and four members of Pi Kappa Phi last fall. It also follows the University introducing a webpage that specifically documents hazing violations on campus.

On the Student Life website’s page for UAct, students can find a step-by-step guide on how to use the new service. After texting the number with a full report including any photos or videos, students will receive a text from a University staff member during regular business hours to ask any clarifying questions. The report will then be sent to an appropriate campus office to investigate.

OPINION | For years, the Machine, a select group of historically white fraternities and sororities has controlled campus elections — particularly SGA and Homecoming.

In the not-so-distant past, the Machine’s methods of control have included cross-burning, physical assault on rival candidates, threats against opponents and a healthy mix of social ostracism. But old habits die hard.

Nowadays, the intimidation tactics are alive and well, albeit in a new form: tacitly requiring Greek organization members to vote for the Machine-endorsed candidates by incessantly encouraging or mandating that those members cast their ballot at all. At least one organization’s member bylaws establish voting requirements in elections, including campus elections.

This year, The Crimson White counted at least five instances of Machine sororities pressuring their members to vote during Tuesday’s elections. These methods included harassing members who had yet to present proof of voting to their executive members, sending text messages and making numerous phone calls to those sorority members, and, in some cases, publicly calling out those who hadn’t voted.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed Sid J. Trant as chancellor of the UA System Friday. Trant has served as interim chancellor for the past 10 months, after the retirement of former chancellor Finis St. John.
