Deadlines for international internships and study abroad programs are pending, and students hoping to spend the summer overseas still have the opportunity to apply.
On Wednesday, Capstone International held a study aboard fair in the Ferguson center. Sixteen providers offered interested students information about semester and yearlong study abroad programs.
Study abroad programs are offered through various providers, said Brittnay McMillian, Capstone International office associate. The providers facilitate students studying abroad, she said.
Some providers offer internships opportunities, she said. Currently, there are two internship opportunities in Dublin, Ireland, and London, she said.
“The London internship is seven weeks and is available to all majors,” she said. “Students select three, four-credit courses at Birkbeck College that accommodate the internship work schedule.”
‘The Dublin internship last six weeks and is also available to all majors,” she said. “Internships are offered in business, media, arts and literature, health and psychology, education, PR and advertising, politics, law and non-governmental organizations.”
Capstone International offers four study abroad programs, said McMillian, including summer group programs, exchange programs, affiliate programs and affiliate University programs.
A UA faculty member leads summer group programs. Students pay a program fee, which includes UA tuition, McMilian said. Credit earned is a standard letter grade. Volunteer and internship opportunities are available, she said.
Exchange programs are semester and yearlong. Students pay regular UA tuition, and it is a pass/fail credit transfer. Volunteer opportunities are available, she said.
Affiliate university programs are offered on summer, semester and yearlong basis. Students pay host university tuition, and no additional UA tuition is charged. Credits transfer as pass/fail.
UA has nearly 90 students studying and interning abroad, McMillian said. Capstone International offers daily information sessions Monday through Friday at12:00 p.m. in B.B. Comer. Walk-ins are accepted.
Applications are accepted for programs until all spots are filled, McMillain said. Payment for the programs is due in March.
Some programs are specific to a student’s major, and some fulfill general education requirements, McMillian said.
“We offer one in Bangladesh for bank training, Germany to study language and political science, and then there are some that would fulfill general ed classes like to Italy to study at history.”
The deadline for a five-week marine science research internship in the Caribbean, is approaching. Applications are due Feb. 26.
One undergraduate and graduate student will be selected. Each will receive room and board, said Dr. Julie Olson, associate professor of biological sciences.
“Hands-on experiences provide students with the opportunity to gain real world practice at something that they otherwise have only learned about in classes, Olson said. “It also allows the student the opportunity to try new things without a long term commitment.”
“This is an opportunity to get to conduct coral reef research at one of the top dive resorts in the Caribbean,” Olson said. “The facilities and the reefs are amazing and the experience would provide a solid foundation for students to build off of in the future. The exposure to research techniques looks good on grad school and professional school applications.”
