The University of Alabama softball team’s dream season came to a screeching halt Sunday, as the team fell in back-to-back games to the University of Florida.
After getting blown out by the Gators 16-2 in their first loss, the team fell once more 9-2, knocking them out of the Women’s College World Series.
Down 9-0, Whitney Larsen used her last at bat to summon up a late-inning comeback, tripling down the line in left to score Jennifer Fenton in the seventh inning. However, Alabama was not able to come up with enough runs to tie the game.
Senior pitcher Kelsi Dunne was saddled with both losses on the day, giving her a 29-6 record on the season. Dunne finished her Alabama career with a school-record 1,219 strikeouts.
The 16 runs Alabama gave up in its first loss are the most in Alabama history and are tied for most in WCWS history. The 11 runs given up in the first inning set a new WCWS record for runs given up in an inning.
This season was the Crimson Tide’s ninth 50-win season and the teams seventh in a row. The Tide has also appeared in 13 straight NCAA tournaments.
