Stillman, Shelton State plans differ from UA

The University of Alabama’s neighboring colleges, Stillman College and Shelton State Community College, have released different plans for the remainder of their school years.

Stillman has canceled classes and final exams but plans to keep its spring graduation ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 7. According to its website, Shelton will resume classes May 2 but has still canceled graduation and given its students the option to not take final exams. Spring 2011 graduates may participate in the December 2011 commencement exercises.

Unlike UA and Shelton State Community College, students do not have the option to take finals at Stillman.

“If you’re on the margin, it’ll be an incomplete,” Stillman president Ernest McNealey said. “If you’ve failed, then you’ve failed. The idea is that you should not have to cram for examinations.”

In relief efforts, Stillman has requested for student volunteers to make donations, serve food and remove debris. One Stillman student, baseball player Will Stevens, has been confirmed dead. Several Stillman students were injured at Charleston Square but have been released from DHC hospital, and no other students are reported missing.
