The Alabama soccer team snagged its first SEC win of the season, beating Tennessee 2-1 in double overtime in Knoxville on Sunday.

“I am so incredibly proud of the team today,” coach Wes Hart said in a press release. “We were able to bring fresh bodies off the bench and eventually wore a very good Tennessee team down.”

In the first half, it was business as usual for Alabama, having a strong offensive start. The Crimson Tide outshot the Volunteers 7-5 in the first half, with four of its shots being on frame. Sophomore forward Riley Mattingly had two one-on-one opportunities against Tennessee freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Romig, but was unable to get the ball into the net. Despite outshooting the Volunteers, the Crimson Tide was unable to capitalize, and the teams entered the locker room tied at zero at the half.

After the break, freshman midfielder Serena Pham scored the first goal of the game via a penalty shot in the 70th minute, giving Alabama the 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Tennessee freshman forward Alicia Donley tied the game with a goal of her own. Both teams reached the end of regulation tied at one, and the game proceeded into overtime.

The first overtime period went by without a goal by either team, and the game proceeded to enter a second overtime.

In the 104th minute, senior defender Nealy Martin ended the tie with the game-winning goal. Martin scored the goal off of a header by freshman midfielder Carlee Giammona, who picked up the assist.

With the win, the Crimson Tide moves to 6-4-1 on the season, and is now 1-2-0 in SEC play. Tennessee drops to 6-4-1, and is now 0-3 in the conference.

“It was a great response after a tough loss to South Carolina and a perfect way to head the week as we look ahead to Mississippi State,” Hart said.
