Alabama soccer lost its SEC opener Sunday at No. 16 Arkansas, 1-0.
The Crimson Tide offense played an aggressive match, shooting the ball 22 times with six shots on goal. The team was unable to take advantage of the scoring opportunities, though, and left a zero on the scoreboard.
“I am incredibly proud of our effort and quality today,” Alabama head coach Wes Hart said. “We created some great opportunity, but just could not find the back of the net. We held a very potent Arkansas attack to just one shot on goal, but unfortunately for us, they made the most of it.”
The lone goal of the game was scored in the seventh minute, with Arkansas freshman forward Anna Podojil hitting a one-timer in front of the net on a Razorbacks counterattack.
The Crimson Tide defense played a stout front, only allowing five shots. The goal scored by Podojil was the only shot on goal the Crimson Tide allowed.
On the offensive side, Alabama had 11 shots in each of the game’s halves. The Crimson Tide also had a total of 12 corner kicks, compared to the Razorbacks’ three.
Alabama junior goalkeeper Alex Plavin played all 90 minutes for the Crimson Tide, allowing the only shot on goal by the Razorbacks in the back of the net. Plavin had zero saves on the day.
With the loss, Alabama drops to 5-3-1 on the season. Arkansas moves to 7-1-1 with the win. Arkansas is now 1-0 in the SEC, with Alabama starting off 0-1 in conference play. Alabama will host the South Carolina Gamecocks Thursday in Tuscaloosa in its first SEC game at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
