The Alabama soccer team dominated Lamar University Sunday afternoon in Beaumont, Texas, defeating the Cardinals 5-0.
The team picked up a win over Rice on Thursday and with the win over Lamar, Alabama improves its record to 3-1.
“Today was a great way to end our weekend in Texas,” coach Wes Hart said. “Two wins against quality opponents that will win their fair share of games this year. I loved our energy to start the game.”
The Crimson Tide got on the board early in the match as redshirt sophomore forward Gabby Duca pocketed the first goal of the match in the 5th minute, assisted by freshman forward Carly Wyatt. The goal started a three-goal, 11-minute run for Alabama.
Just two minutes after Duca’s goal, junior forward Casey Wertz scored, assisted by Duca. Sophomore midfielder Kat Rogers scored the third goal for the Crimson Tide in the 16th minute, giving Alabama a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, the Crimson Tide kept its foot on the gas. In the 71st minute, freshman midfielder Carlee Giammona registered the first goal of her college career with a penalty kick. Sophomore forward Riley Mattingly finished the scoring for Alabama with a goal in the 83rd minute, with Wertz picking up the assist.
The team dominated the Cardinals on offense, outshooting them 34-7 with 22 of those shots on goal. Alabama also earned eight more corner kicks than Lamar, besting the Cardinals 9-1.
The offensive production has recently payed off on the scoreboard. In its last three outings, Alabama has outscored opponents 10-1, with the points being spread out among the team. Of those 10 points, seven different Alabama players have scored.
“We jumped on them early and never looked back,” Hart said. “It was great to see five different players score goals today, and several players saw their first action of the season. We are in a good place right now heading into a very difficult challenge at Virginia Tech.”
Alabama continues its road trip Thursday, shifting from the state of Texas to Virginia, where the Crimson Tide is set to face off against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The match is scheduled for Thursday, with the kickoff set for 6 p.m. CT.
