Apollo moon landing lecture remembers technological milestones

Andrew Littlejohn, Contributing Writer

Harold Selesky, an associate professor of history at The University of Alabama, will be directing a lecture entitled “A Triumph of American Technology: Remembering the 1969 Apollo Moon Landing on Its 50th Anniversary.” There will be three talks during the event on April 10.

Who: This event is open to all.

What: The three talks are: “How We Got There: the Technology of Rocketry and Space Flight” by John Baker, professor of aerospace engineering and mechanics; “The Space Race: Beating the Ruskies to the Moon” by Margaret Peacock, associate professor of history; “Climbing the Mountain: From Flopnik to a Giant Leap for Mankind” by Selesky.

Where: Gorgas 205

When: April 10 at 5:15 p.m.

Why:

“Twelve men have set foot on the moon. Only 4 live,” Selesky said. “The youngest is 83. Soon there won’t be anyone to tell their story. It’s apparently quite easy putting a man on the moon. It’s getting him back that’s hard.”
