Alabama practiced under flawless weather – 74 degrees with a slight breeze – on Thursday afternoon as it approached the midway point of spring practice. Here are our observations from the seventh of 15 spring practices:

We got our first look at full-team defensive drills right at the start of the viewing period. There were a lot of players obstructing the view, but we could see early-enrolled outside linebacker Kevin Harris II practicing with first-teamers Xavier McKinney, Jared Mayden and LaBryan Ray. Early-enrolled defensive linemen Antonio Alfano and D.J. Dale joined Christian Barmore on the second team next to outside linebacker Jarez Parks. Jaylen Moody and Markail Benton were the inside linebackers behind them. Shane Lee and Ale Kaho were the third-team ILBs.

Anfernee Jennings and Christopher Allen led off outside linebacker drills, followed by Eyabi Anoma and Harris. Terrell Lewis’ status remained the same. He was present at practice but did not participate, walking around carrying his helmet. He laughed loudly when Jennings slipped and fell during a drill, and OLBs coach Sal Sunseri turned to the media nearby and joked, “You guys better erase that!”

Later the outside linebackers practiced flipping coverage assignments in pairs. Based on Sunseri’s calls, one of them would simulate rushing the passer and one would drop into coverage.

Some of the defensive backs went through agility drills in this order: McKinney, Mayden, Trevon Diggs, Patrick Surtain II, Daniel Wright, Nigel Knott, Jalyn Armour-Davis.

Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy and 2020 defensive lineman commit Jayson Jones were also present at practice.

The team will make a few players available to reporters on Friday and will hold a scrimmage in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.
