Alabama walks off South Dakota State in fourteenth inning
March 6, 2019
In the bottom of the fourteenth inning, Alabama baseball had a chance to walk off South Dakota State.
Joe Breaux led off the inning with a double that hit the right-center field wall. He advanced to third on a Kolby Robinson bunt.
After an intentional walk, Tyler Gentry was up. On a 2-2 pitch, he sent a breaking ball passed the third baseman scoring Breaux, giving Alabama a 5-4 win.
“I’m glad to get the win,” coach Brad Bohannon said. “Hopefully we were able to learn a lesson and win a baseball game… That’s two days in a row that the games have been tight late, and our kids were able to stay relaxed and win a baseball game. That means something. That’s really valuable.”
Alabama had several chances to win earlier in the game, starting in the ninth. The Crimson Tide entered the inning up three. Freshman Jacob McNairy got two outs and a runner on second. Back-to-back singles scored the first run of the inning, signaling the end of McNairy’s night.
Deacon Medders entered and failed to get the last out. He allowed a single and a walk, scoring a second run of the inning.
For the second-straight game, Bohannon called upon his closer Jeremy Randolph with the bases loaded. He walked the first batter he faced, scoring the tying run.
Once the game went to extras, it was Randolph and Kyle Cameron were the two pitchers Bohannon used. Randolph went the first three innings in extras, while Cameron threw the last two. They allowed a combined three hits, while Randolph struck out five total batters.
“What Kyle Cameron and Jeremy Randolph did out of the bullpen was just awesome,” Bohannon said.
Alabama started the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second, Gentry singled to left. The left fielder threw wide of home plate as Robinson tried to score. After Keith Holcombe was hit by a pitch to load the bases, the Jackrabbits’ catcher failed to cleanly catch the pitch, allowing Morgan McCullough to score.
Alabama added another run in the third inning. McCullough tripled down the right field line with one out. Gentry brought in the run again by grounding out.
The fourth Crimson Tide run was scored in the fifth, when it had three-consecutive singles to lead off the inning.
Tyler Ras started the game, throwing four innings. He allowed three hits and struck out two. Overall, Alabama used eight pitchers, four of which were freshmen.
Alabama is back in action on Friday, when it hosts North Kentucky.
