UA Senate passes resolution to put Vive La Fete on notice
September 30, 2018
The University of Alabama Senate passed a resolution to place clothing company, Vive la Fete, on notice on Sept. 27.
According to the resolution, the baby clothing company is a logo licensee with the University and has been accused of committing human rights abuses such as paying workers under minimum wage and resisting to rectify such violations.
The University allows the company to embroider the script A on their clothes for infants, said the resolution’s author, Senator Cara Clay.
Clay, a junior majoring in economics and geography, said the resolution would promote positive decision-making among students and faculty on campus.
“We have an obligation to try to improve the world around us and make morally correct decisions,” Clay said.
Senators also sent two separate acts to two different committees in rapid succession.
The Senate sent an act to ratify the operating budget of the SGA for the 2019 fiscal year written by Vice President for Financial Affairs Clay Gaddis, a junior majoring in biology, to the finance committee.
The Senate also sent Senator Jason Rothfarb’s act to set a deadline for legislation and the docket to the rules committee.
Rothfarb, a sophomore majoring in political science, said his act would provide senators with a deadline to submit legislation to the secretary of the Senate in addition to setting a deadline for the secretary of the Senate to release the week’s docket.
“When we get the legislation sent out to us, we don’t necessarily have a good amount of time to look over it,” Rothfarb said. “By having set deadlines to when the docket is released, and when all legislation is required to be submitted, this gives all senators an ample amount of time to review legislation, and this will give us a better opportunity if it’s something we support or are against.”
