The watch lists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards were announced Monday by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia, with each featuring three Alabama players among its group of 85.

The watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the best all-around player in college football, includes quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa and running back Damien Harris.

An Alabama player has won the award in two of the last five seasons: quarterback A.J. McCarron in 2013 and running back Derrick Henry in 2015. Over the last four seasons, the Maxwell Award winner has also won the Heisman Trophy.

Linebackers Mack Wilson and Anfernee Jennings and defensive lineman Raekwon Davis were named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which goes to college football’s best defensive player each year.

Wilson, Jennings and Davis are each looking to become the third consecutive Alabama player to win the award, following defensive lineman Jonathan Allen in 2016 and defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick last year. Allen and Fitzpatrick were also first-round NFL draft picks.

Hurts burst onto the scene as a true freshman in 2016, starting the final 14 games of the season, earning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors and scoring a go-ahead touchdown in the closing minutes of the national championship game against Clemson. His career record as a starter is 26-2.

His most recent start, however, was finished by Tua Tagovailoa in last season’s national championship. Fans clamored for the true freshman from Ewa Beach, Hawaii to supplant Hurts as the starter; those murmurs intensified after he revitalized the offense en route to Alabama’s fifth national title in the last nine seasons.

Harris opted to return for his senior season, forgoing the NFL Draft for another year. He has run for more than 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons and his 7.2 yards per carry rank second in Alabama history (min. 200 carries).

Davis is well on his way to becoming the next in a series of heralded Alabama defensive linemen. He led the team with 8.5 sacks last year, carrying the team’s pass rush while several linebackers recovered from injury. He also recorded a crucial interception in the third quarter of the national championship that led to a field goal.

Jennings, a five-time team defensive player of the week, also helped keep the defense afloat amid a rash of injuries to the linebacking corps. He finished the season with 41 tackles and six tackles for loss, three of which came in the national semifinal against Clemson.

Wilson, not Minkah Fitzpatrick or another defensive back, led Alabama with four interceptions last season. That included a pick-six against Clemson, part of an excellent postseason for the now-junior linebacker. Against Clemson and Georgia, he posted 18 tackles and three tackles for loss, including a career-high and team-leading 12 tackles in the title game.

The recipients of these two awards and several others will be announced at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December.
