Intercultural Diversity Center hosts #WokeShop to create dialogue among students

Intercultural+Diversity+Center+hosts+%23WokeShop+to+create+dialogue+among+students

Who: UA Intercultural Diversity Center

What: “#WokeShop” is a new program launched by the Intercultural Diversity Center to last throughout African American History Month. This includes a series of workshops to help students engage in dialogue in order to explore different cultures, background and cover different issues.

When: 6 p.m. on Feb. 21

Where: Intercultural Diversity Center on the first floor of the Riverside Community Center

Why: This week’s #WokeShop theme is “Self-Care for Social Justice Advocates.”

Teryn Shipman, an organizer of the event and coordinating student assistant with the Intercultural Diversity Center, said that this week’s #WokeShop topic is important because it will “explore the ways that social justice advocacy adds to our stress and how to more fully integrate ‘rest.’ It hinges on feminist Audre Lorde’s pivotal idea that ‘Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.’”
