In honor of Black History Month, University Programs (UP) is promoting the 6th annual Tuscaloosa Africana Film Festival with a discussion workshop on Feb. 1. The film festival, which runs this Saturday as a part of the Tuscaloosa Heritage Festival, is backed by UP in hopes that students will gain some knowledge as to the impact of media on social activism and change.

All are welcome to attend the event, which will feature Emmy Award winning filmmaker Tyrik Washington leading the discussion and workshop. Washington will also show a short version of his film “Under the Heavens.” This event is cosponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and the UA African Students Association.

Who: University Programs is hosting the event for anyone who wants to attend

What: “Arts in Activism” workshop and discussion

When: Feb. 1, 7-9 p.m.

Where: Russell Hall 159

Why: “This event will provide students an opportunity to learn more about film contributions to social change and other activism efforts,” said Shemaiah Kenon, Special Events Coordinator for UP. “It is important for students to understand the correlation between the two and how it influences perspectives and in some cases, realities.”
