Governor of Alabama Kay Ivey signed legislation that will permit nonresident students to take advantage of all of the same rules that are in place for resident students related to hunting, fishing their licenses and fees. Previously, nonresident students were not eligible for the same fee structure that in state students have available to them, causing complications.
However, nonresident students are still prohibited from obtaining a lifetime Alabama hunting license or fishing license. The nonresident students must provide proof of their status before being eligible for their license.
Price McGiffert, SGA’s Director of External Affairs, is thrilled with the passage of the bill and was present at the signing in Montgomery.
“I would like to thank Governor Ivey and Representative Hanes for their support of college students in the state of Alabama,” McGiffert said. “It was my honor and privilege to witness the singing today in Montgomery.”
The language of the legislation defines a nonresident student as a nonresident at no less than 17 years of age and under 24 years of age who is currently enrolled as a full-time student at an institution of higher education.
