Alabama soccer tied Kentucky in its second Southeastern Conference game of the season. Alabama’s record is now 6-2-1 and 1-0-1 in SEC play, while Kentucky’s record becomes 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
The first half remained deadlocked for the entire 45 minutes, but not without offensive chances from both teams. Alabama registered four shots on goal, but it could not convert. Junior Kat Stratton earned two saves for the first half, with Kentucky taking 15 shots during the period.
The second half continued to be scoreless until the 74th minute when Alabama sophomore Abbie Boswell converted on a chance five yards away on a cross from freshman Logue Shamburger. With that goal, Alabama took a 1-0 that would soon be wiped away, as Kentucky’s Katy Keen found the back of the net on a penalty kick, tying the game at 1-1 in the 84th minute.
Regulation would end with both teams having a goal.
In overtime, Alabama dominated the first period with six shots and three on the goal, but it was unable to score. Kentucky had a shot on goal, but also could not convert.
The second overtime saw both teams putting together a couple of nice chances, but the game would eventually end in a tie.
“I am extremely proud of the response our team had after a poor start to the game,” said head coach Wes Hart in a press release. “I have to commend the effort and quality of the subs who came in and helped us play ourselves back into the game. I am a bit disappointed we didn’t secure the win after leading by a goal late in the game, but we will take the point on the on the road against a quality SEC opponent.”
Alabama will be back in action as the Crimson Tide returns home to take on Arkansas on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
