Alabama soccer tied LSU on the road Sunday, 0-0, in a game that went to double overtime. With Alabama’s draw and Georgia suffering a loss, the Crimson Tide earns a berth to the Southeastern Conference Tournament, which will be its first appearance since the 2014 season.
The first half against LSU was a scoreless battle, but both teams created chances. Junior goalkeeper Kat Stratton made four saves in the first half, including one where she left her spot to deflect a shot. Alabama picked up two shots on goal with junior Chatham Deprospo challenging LSU from 25 yards out.
The second half was much of the same, as both Alabama and LSU failed to score off of multiple chances. Even though LSU got forward on the attack, Stratton did not have to make a save, as Alabama blocked most of the Tigers’ shots. Sophomore Kayla Mouton blocked a shot taken from five yards out to save a possible goal for LSU. Alabama registered eight shots and five corner kicks as the game would remain scoreless and head to overtime.
In the first overtime period, LSU looked to have a solid chance on goal before senior Caroline Alexander cleared the shot off of the line to prevent a goal. In the second overtime, Alabama got its best chance in the extra minutes, as senior Auburn Mercer headed a ball just high off of a corner kick. Neither team was able to create a strong enough chance still, and the game ended in a scoreless tie.
With the draw, Alabama moves to 8-7-2 on the season with a 3-5-2 record in SEC play. This is the third straight game between Alabama and LSU that has been decided in double overtime.
Next, the Crimson Tide will play its final regular season match when Alabama takes on Vanderbilt in Tuscaloosa. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday.
