Not on Our Campus is a student group at The University of Alabama that seeks to raise awareness and find solutions for the nationwide issue of sexual assault on college campuses. This weekend, they will be hosting a walk to grab the attention of the administration and the student body.
WHO: The event is sponsored by Not on Our Campus and is open to all students.
WHAT: The Walk of Shame is designed to raise awareness about sexual assault on campus.
“This isn’t aimed to fraternities or anything. This was just one of the walking routes available on the SOURCE web page,” said Emily Triolet, organizer of the event and a freshman majoring in biochemistry and micro biology.
The walk also aims to raise money for the Women and Gender Resource Center. “We’re going to be accepting donations to the Women and Gender Resource Center on site,” Triolet said. “They weren’t able to come out and sponsor the walk itself, probably because it’s so new, but we hope that, if it’s a success, we can do it again.”
WHEN: The walk will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 11:30 a.m.
WHERE: The walk will begin at Denny Chimes and proceed to the parking lot at the Old Student Recreation Center.
WHY: Triolet said the main goal of the walk is to raise awareness and address campus issues. “We are doing a walk to address the attitudes about sexual assault on campus and especially because so many girls this year alone have been sexually assaulted,” she said.
Triolet said Not on Our Campus encourages participants to “dress provocatively.”
“By doing that, we hope to not only grab the University’s attention, but also to demote the idea that anyone deserves to be sexually assaulted because of what they’re wearing, or that someone’s a slut because they’re wearing what they feel good in.”
