Jo Jo’s Food Truck: C-
With Mardi Gras in full swing across the southern border of Alabama, my mouth has been watering for a good po’ boy. Therefore, when I saw chicken po’ boy’s on the daily changing menu at Jo Jo’s food truck on campus, I immediately got in line.
I ordered the chicken po’ boy, mac & cheese spring rolls and a cup of sweet tea.
The ordering process was quick and easy, despite the long line, and the service was more than delightful.
My food arrived and I began digging in.
The mac & cheese spring rolls are the one thing that stay on the menu at Jo Jo’s and have been quite the buzz around campus.
Biting in I was expecting a cheese-stick-like consistency, but with filling noodles tucked in the deep fried, cheesy goodness. Instead, I was greeted with a dryer version of mac & cheese. While it was obviously homemade, I was hoping for the stringy cheese filling.
When I saw the po’ boy, I immediately knew I was not in for an authentic taste.
The bread was a French roll that had been lightly toasted on the grill. It was topped with lettuce, an over-ripe tomato and a single deep fried chicken tender and was served with a side of ranch dressing.
While the bread and toppings did not provide an authentic po’ boy flavor, the chicken was cooked perfectly.
It came out the perfect golden brown that provided a delicious crisp and was pulled out of the fryer at the exact moment of being completely cooked and provided a juicy inside with lots of natural flavor.
The sweet tea was a northern version of sweet tea that offered a bitter aftertaste.
Overall, Jo Jo’s offered a traditional food truck experience. The service was fantastic and quick, and compared to other food trucks I have visited, the food was competitively priced.
With their always changing menu and their great reviews on some of their other dishes, I am optimistic that their reputation will supersede my one experience.
